Tutorial: Peaked Roof cupcake boxes for your Silhouette cutting machine

This week I uploaded peaked roof cup cake/gift boxes into the Silhouette online store. You will find a few options within the files to create a box that is just right for you. There are two options for the bottom of the box. One would be better for cupcakes, and has a dip on one side so the cup cake can go in and out of the box easily. You will want to cut the cupcake base holder if you use this option. The other box bottom does not have a dip and would be better as a gift box. There are optional contrasting panels that you can use underneath the cut part of the design. You can use the box without these panels as well. The elephant box above is an example of using contrasting panels on the sides and on the peaked roof. The other boxes above only use panels underneath the roof.

For these projects you will need this Equipment:

A Silhouette Electronic Cutting machine. This file works great with both the Silhouette Cameo and the Silhouette Portrait cutting machines. If you use the portrait machine, you will need to rearrange the pieces to fit in your cutting area. To move the pieces around individually, ungroup the file under edit.

Adhesive:
Glue (use a good paper glue like Tombow mono liquid glue it will not warp your paper.)
-and/or-
Double Sided adhesive. (I use a Scotch ATG 714 gun. Scotch got smart and made a similar one for crafters the Scotch Cat 085--it's quite a bit less $ than the 714. I like that it has a seemingly endless roll of adhesive. It saves a ton of money in the long run when compared to little craft adhesive dispensers. Especially if you buy the adhesive reels in bulk.)

Silhouette Tutorial: Heart Latch top Box

Thanks for popping in today! This week in the Silhouette online store, I will be releasing a few new cards and projects. So in this post, I will show you how one of the designs you can look forward to. Below, I'll show you how to fold and assemble the Heart Latch top Box.

To make this box, you will need this file:

Contrasting Paper: 
I used my Cardinal paper from my Keepin' Cozy Collection line for Echo Park. ("Let it snow" and "Cardinals") I also used DCWV Glitter Brights card stock multi color stack for the aqua heart on the top of the box.

Equipment:
You will also need a Silhouette Cameo or Portrait machine to cut this box. This is designed for a 12X12 mat, so you will need to follow the instructions below if you have the portrait machine.

Portrait machine adaptations: 
Select all the cut lines do not ungroup before this step. Choose Object from the top menu. Choose transform. Choose scale options. A window will now appear on the right side of your screen giving you scaling options. While everything is still selected, look for the box below the word "custom" in the new side panel menu, and put 75% there, then click apply. Now move the cut lines onto your live cutting area. You may not be able to cut the square panels at the same time, so in the Studio software, ungroup and move the parts off the live cutting area that you won't need in your first cutting pass. Then, in the studio software, move the parts you just cut off of the live cutting area and place the parts on the live cutting mat that you want to cut next.  Put your contrasting paper on the cutting mat, and send your mat through the machine again with your new paper.

Assembly:
1. Cut your shapes in your coordinating papers.
2. Glue the hearts on the heart latches with a paper glue like Tombow mono adhesive.
3. Glue the panels on the box with paper glue.
4. Fold all the panels and tabs of the box inward.
5. Glue the first two tabs to the nearest side.
6. Glue the tabs that are on the opposite side of the box to their nearest panel.
7. Fold the tabbed top down and tuck the tab.
8. To latch the top, you have two choices. Both ways are shown in the step shots above. Look at the bottom row, the first and second example show the heart folded slightly different ways. On the sample with the hand in it, I tucked one heart bump under the other. This method the box will hold closed. In the example right to it, I just let the heart easily fold down without tucking. Basically for the one that will stay closed, you need to tuck the heart bump in the opposite way it wants to naturally go down. This part may not make sense until you start to do it, but it will...promise. ;)
9. Add a coordinating ribbon and any other stickers or embellishments that you choose.
